Acne! At my age.

Not that I think I am to old to be getting acne, but I didn't think at my age I would be getting acne. I would say that thus far 90% of my life I have had clear nice skin with no acne problems. I had a short period when I was 17 when I had a cat that I broke out but only then. When we moved here to the south, about 9 months later is when I started seeing my face change. More often then not during the last two years I have had painful acne on the bottom third of my face. I know there are triggers as to why I get them, like leaning on my hand while at the desk or at the table. but I don't get why now. If anything we eat better and healthier.

Why did I go from this,

to this? No lie, this zit has been there for almost 2 months. Getting bigger then smaller, but never leaving all together.

I get what Doctors call Nodule and Cyst acne. This is what I learned so far about it:

Severe acne vulgaris is characterized by nodules and cysts:
Nodules: As opposed to the lesions mentioned above, nodular acne consists of acne spots which are much larger, can be quite painful, and can sometimes last for months.1 Nodules are large, hard bumps under the skin's surface.2 Scarring is common. Unresolved nodules can sometimes leave an impaction behind, which can flare again and again. Absolutely do not attempt to squeeze such a lesion. You may cause severe trauma to the skin and the lesion may last for months longer than it normally would. Dermatologists often have ways of lessening swelling and preventing scarring, such as injecting the lesion with cortisone.
cyst
Cysts: An acne cyst can appear similar to a nodule, but is pus-filled.2 They can be painful. Scarring is common with cystic acne. Squeezing an acne cyst may cause a deeper infection and more painful inflammation which will last much longer than if you had left it alone. Dermatologists often have ways of lessening swelling and preventing scarring, such as administering a cortisone shot.

I have been to the doctor before and asked for help, but all they do is give me the same stuff you can buy at the store, which just dries out my skin. I really hate my skin and hate how it make me feel. I am really blessed to not have severe acne, but still having it hurts, emotionally and physically.

Have you dealt with acne? When I try to hide it it just makes it worse. Another reason I don't wear makeup. How do hide something that pops out at you.

  1. i really like the clarisonic face brush, they are expensive though. The whole idea is that they clean deep down so your other products work better.

  2. Liz, I'll be 40 in January and to this very day if I touch my chin/mouth area for just a few minutes, I end up getting a pimple. My teenage acne was never bad, compared to those poor kids whose cheeks were covered. I still have problems with whiteheads. I regularly exfoliate with a rough exfoliating glove (at least twice a week). I also use Neutrogena moisturizer (I'll get back to you on which one, bc it makes my skin tingle). At least once a year, I get one of those really ugly, painful ones that you can't squeeze and when you do, it just makes it worse.
Consider that you went on vacation, where the water is different. Whether you drink it or bathe in it, the minerals have an effect on your skin. When we got back here from Italy my skin broke out BAD and all my nails broke. Happens every time I move.
If you can handle it, eat a ton of garlic...powder on pizza, raw if you can stand it (and Weston too, cause you will stink!). Try making garlic butter. Take a whole piece of garlic, slice off the top to expose all the cloves. Put in a baking dish, cover with tinfoil and bake about an hour (temp? 250? 300?). When it comes out, it's moist and spreadable....spread on some toasted Italian bread. It's divine.

  4. ^^She's right... you're always beautiful!
Do you make sure you wash your face every night before bed & follow with a moisturizer. Whenever I feel my acne getting bad I always make sure I am diligent about washing my face and making sure I use a good, quality moisturizer right after. I also make sure I use the same wash, and same moisturizer the following morning when I shower. My acne usually starts to clear within a day or two. I know they say to dry out the acne, but I don't believe it. Because whenever I've used proactiv stuff or a prescription that dries it out, my acne gets worse and more painful. It makes no sense, because they dry skin only CLOGS pores...? I don't get it. But the night time is when your skin rejuvenates itself, and making sure it's clean and moisturized is critical.
    Idk... just my two cents.
Did I mention to clean your face & use moisturizer?

  5. Thanks ladies, Yesterday morning I woke up to some new large under the skin zits, while laying in bed I thought for sure I would see a huge white head. That is how big and painful it was. I wash my face every night and morning, as well as shower times after the gym. I use Shaklee face wash and toner with a moisturizer, I recently added an acne cream. I think over all the wash is great and would never use a store brand wash again, but I have seen no difference since using the acne cream. Last week while on vacation I forgot my wash so I did have to buy some at the store, I hated it. I am not sure if that is why I broke out more or not, either way I just want them gone. Still unsure if I should ask a doctor or not??? we'll see.
